WHO CARES ABOUT THE FACT THAT THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF ANIMALS IN NICARAGUA IN DANGER OF EXTINCTION? The People with disabilities who work in FE care a lot so much so that they are hosting the first Fair :Our Animals in danger of extinction in order to raise awareness. The fair will take place on April 8th the 200th anniversary of the death of Saint Julie Billiart, founder of the Sisters of Notre Dame who are dedicated to working on the environment. This dedication became strong when Sister Dorthy Stang a sistser with 34 years of work in Brazil was brutally murdered by hired killers in 2005.

“The death of the Forest is the end of our life.” these words of Hermana Dorothy Stang defending the forest, are words that ring true for us with the many species of animals who are now in danger here in Nicaragua. The artists have been working for a year to learn about the situation and to use their artistic talents to try to make the names of these animals known and present to every person possible.

Brittany Bye a Notre Dame International Volunteer has been developing the project which also includes the publishing of a child’s book : “Pepe and The Animals Work to Overcome Extinction” She is working on the judging of the drawings which will be on dispaly during the feria and also in Girasol for two weeks.

We had a press conference where Brittany spoke and was accompanied by Angelica Garcia who is one of the artists who has been working on the project drawing and painting as many different animals as possible. Many channels were present and they were surprised to learn about the number of animals and species who are in danger so they have been very interested in getting the word out.
The artists have painted cards, purses, painted CDs, murals banners and doorstops with the animal’s names and images, The idea is to get the word out that these animals are losing their habitat and will soon disappear, many of these artists having hearing impairment and understand all to well what it is like to not have a voice and so they are seeking ways that these animals will have a voice in their future.

We have gathered together different groups and people who wdsdsdant to share in this mission of getting the word out. We had a drawing contest among primary and secondary schools so far there are over 200 entries. The judging took place on April sixth and the prizes will be given during the fair by people from different institutions and organizations who are working towards saving our planet. It will be a day filled with activities from speakers about the situation to the awarding of the prizes for the children’s drawings and the sharing of information as to how each person can make a difference. The fair will be in Saint Julie Park and all areas of Familias Especiales will participate making this a community effort as the mother leaders from the neighborhoods are also having a drawing contest and our primary special education school as well.

here are more fotos of the prepartion of the feria and the judging of the contest.

Today we had a wonderful meeting with all the responsables in Familias Especiales where we shared ideas on how we could imporve our program of Yogurt Yogurt con amor. This small business has been very important to Special Families in that it has an excellent product and this same product which is delicious, is also very nutritional. This makes it very valuable for the integrated work of speical families because it can be used in the social area to help imporve the diet of our families. In this meeting we were able to hear about the work of Adraiana our new person in charge of sales. We made the decision to concentrate sales in certain strategic posts and not try to sell door to door. This decision affects the type of person we look for in selling our product. The yogurt program is also getting ready for a national competition in cheeses for this month in Managua. They will receive some training before the competition and will be entering the competition because they won first place in cheese for the northern region of Matagalpa. We will keep you posted on this contest.
